Strategic Management


In today’s increasingly competitive and ever more complicated global business climate leaders of Council member firms are continuously reviewing their business strategies.  Are we in the right markets?  Is our distribution model right?  Do we have the best people and are we getting the most from them?  Are we using our capital effectively?  Are there other markets for our products?  How can I be a more effective leader and develop other leaders in our company?

To help you ask the right questions and find some answers the Council of Industry is teaming with the SUNY New Paltz School of Business to offer a series of strategic management seminars.  These seminars – taught by New Paltz faculty along the lines of the Harvard Business Cases Study model – will help you develop insights into your company, your customers, your processes, your employees and yourself.  The seminars are intended for senior level staff, people who report directly to owners or the sight managers.  They will be held evenings and will include a working dinner.  Some reading (typically case studies roughly 20 pages in length) will be provided prior to each session.  These seminars parallel the School of Business’s MBA capstone course “Cases in Strategic Management.”

Certificate in Manufacturing Leadership

The Council of Industry has offered quality supervisory training to its members in the Hudson Valley for over 20 years. The Certificate in Manufacturing Leadership is a comprehensive group of courses that prepares supervisors for their challenging positions at manufacturing facilities.

The program is designed to offer particular skill sets through concentrations of courses. Participants who complete the required courses are presented with the Certificate in Manufacturing Leadership presented by the Council of Industry and Dutchess Community College.

All courses are full-day classes (from 9am - 4:30pm) and are held at Dutchess Community College, Poughkeepsie, NY with breakfast and lunch included on site.

Though participants are encouraged to complete the course series for the most comprehensive supervisory education, the Council welcomes individual course registration as well.

Introduction to Lean Manufacturing

Description: The first half of this program will cover Legal Management Issues. This class identifies and explains key legal issues that a manager may have to address in the workplace today. It helps current and future managers realize their responsibility to understand and enforce the employment laws that speak to these issues which can minimize their chances of ending up in court.
This course will cover: employers’ rights and obligations, employment laws, regulations governing business, hiring, performance, discipline issues and Affirmative Action.

The second part this program will cover Management Diversity. This course is for managers who direct a culturally diverse staff or serve a diverse customer base. Training covers communicating effectively with diverse audiences and managing cross cultural issues such as concepts of time (deadlines, schedules, meetings), power (levels of formality, negotiations), and communication styles (direct v. indirect). Building Business Communication Skills

Description: In this course, participants will gain an understanding of the importance of good communication skill in the workplace.  Whether speaking informally, making a formal presentation, leaving a voicemail, participating in a teleconference, writing a memo, report, email, fax or letter you are sending very important messages – some that you intend to and some that you may not.  This class will explore the basic communication model, examine different styles of communicating, identify participants’ primary communication style and develop an action plan to help participants improve their overall communications.  This is a very practical class and participants will leave with ideas they can put to use immediately.

 

CGMP: Current Good Manufacturing Practices Awareness Training

Description: Applicable to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic and the Medical Device industries, FDA cGMP Awareness Training will give attendees an opportunity to learn how the FDA guidelines and regulations affect their organization and how they can help the organization maintain compliance while remaining competitive. This class is specifically applicable to Drug, Cosmetic and Medical Device industries. Program can be tailored for “on-site” delivery for a company specific review. Attendees will gain:

Description: Selecting the best candidate for a job opening (internal or external) is like putting them through a large funnel of successive screening processes until the best one emerges.  This workshop will help employers dramatically improve their ability to make good candidate selections.  We will cover recruiting sources, resume and phone screens and the job interview.  Participants will learn why traditional interviews don’t provide a true picture of how a candidate will actually perform on the job.  This is a very practical session designed to teach you how to conduct more effective interviews by utilizing a technique known as Behavioral Interviewing.  Participants will learn how to identify the skills and characteristics they are seeking, develop an interview plan that includes specific questions, and then evaluate the candidates.

This program focuses on developing the skills to successfully achieve process improvement on any process or service, process alignment (strategy/customer). Theory and Practice of Open Innovation

Vacuum System Design

Description: This course deals with the principal aspects of system design, including materials selection, fabrication techniques, pump selection, sizing pumps and vacuum piping to a chamber, determining pump down-time, leak rate specification, and surface preparation procedures. Methods for determining ultimate pressures are also discussed.

The course demonstrates that establishing the vacuum environment is the primary criterion for designing, constructing, and operating a vacuum system. A wide range of vacuum environments are discussed, from rough to ultrahigh vacuum, with emphasis on achieving a well-defined degree of vacuum.

Description: Participants will learn why standard work is a building block for continuous improvement, how to create it, and how to visually present it to the associates on the manufacturing floor. There will be a classroom exercise that drives home the predictable and repeatable process by eliminating method, machine, and materials variation.

Participants will learn where and when to apply supermarket concepts, the mathematical calculations for sizing, and a variety of signaling methods used to signal production. They will also learn to use in-process Kanbans as start/stop signals to prevent overproduction. There will be a discussion on how the roles of traditional MRP/ERP systems change in a pull environment.

Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Training

The importance of delivering an excellent customer experience is clearly understood by today’s successful business owners.  It is the path to increased market share and profitability, as well as the only way in which to earn customer loyalty.  Consumer expectations have always been high and will continue to be even more so in the midst of a down turned economy. Additionally, consumers have many more choices for vendors than they’ have ever had before.  In order to break away from the pack and differentiate yourself from your competitors, you must exceed your customers’ expectations.  This must be done at each interaction point within your organization.  Delivering a consistent, memorable customer service experience is the only true sustainable competitive advantage.

Description:This full day training provides attendees with tools that are easily implemented in order to identify and cultivate their customer relationships. The training will be broken up in to three components:

  • Effectively Transform Irate Customers - participants will learn how to turn an irate customer into a loyal one and how to keep their cool when customers get hot. They will also learn how to turn complaints into profits, remain motivated and productive, and how to ask for referrals and earn repeat business.
  • Empathetic & Effective Listening Skills - This component teaches participants ways to over come barriers that interfere with listening and develop awareness of how attitudes affect what other people hear. They will be taught to evaluate examples of poor listening and their result on the customer experience and strategize  guidelines to empathetic listening. They will become a problem solver with sharpened critical thinking skills in terms of providing customer alternatives.
  • Outstanding Customer Service (for external & internal customers) - participants learn it is not what you say but how you say it in this component. They will also learn how to manage stress so the customer doesn't hear it, the difference between you and I messages  and how to say no when and if you must.

RCRA Hazardous Waste Training

Who should attend the training?
Federal and State regulation require that individuals at facilities classified as Large Quantity Generators of hazardous waste (>1,000 kg/month) involved with the management and handling of hazardous waste (i.e. label drums, transport, etc.) must receive RCRA hazardous waste training on an annual basis.

Blood Borne Pathogens

Description: The content of Blood borne Pathogens will include:
An accessible copy and explanation of OSHA's B1910.1030. A general explanation of the epidemiology and symptoms of blood borne diseases; the modes of transmission of blood borne pathogens; the written exposure control plan and how to get a copy; how to recognize events that may involve exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials; selection, proper use, location, removal, handling, decontamination, and disposal of personal protective equipment; the use and limitations of safe work practices, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment. Also the course would include information on hepatitis B vaccination, such as safety, benefits, efficacy, and availability; the procedures to follow if an exposure occurs, including methods of reporting and the medical follow-up that will be made available; Information on post exposure evaluation and follow-up; and an explanation of information on the warning signs, labels, and color coding.

DOT Hazardous Materials Training

Description: The DOT Hazardous Material training will address the following topics: Overview of Hazardous Materials regulations, Definition of Hazardous Material, How to properly name a Hazardous Material, How to package, label and prepare manifest for Hazardous Materials Emergency Response.

Who should attend the training?
DOT regulation 49 CFR 172.700 requires that all "hazmat employees" be trained or retrained every 3 years. "Hazmat employees" include anyone who labels, marks, loads/unloads, prepares shipping papers or transports hazardous materials by road, water, rail or air.

HAZWOPER

Description: The training will consist of four hours of classroom sessions including presentations, question and answer and video presentations, as well as four hours of hands-on training. This training will include:

Classroom: Overview of HAZWOPER regulations; Health and physical hazards associated with spill response; Toxicology; Risk Assessments (electrical, confined space, heat, noise, etc.); Fire protection; Hazard identification and communications; Personal protective equipment; Hazard control; and Monitoring and Instrumentation.

Hands-on Training: Dress out Level D, C and B personnel protection; Methods of decontamination; Donning/doffing of respirators and their limitations; One drum scenario (recognize labels, reference materials, spill control, PPE selection, plug patch repair and over pack of drum, label over pack); Decontamination and Critique of scenario training.

Basic Programmable Logic Controls PLC’S

Description: This course will cover PLC Hardware: Power Supply, Central Processor, Memory and Input/Output Cards; How PLC's Work: How logic is solved and Scan Time; Instructions: Contact, Coils and Timers/Counters. Also learn how to read ladder logics and troubleshooting.

 

Intermediate Electricity: Theory and Measurements

Description: This course will feature the following: Review of electricity basics, Electrical components, identification and uses (inductors, capacitors, switches, relays, sensors, potentiometers/rheostats, solenoids, etc.), Schematics for advanced electrical circuits and Analyzing and troubleshooting advanced circuits (theory and measurement). The following hands on exercises will also be conducted: Wiring and testing advanced circuits, Analyzing and troubleshooting advanced circuits and Troubleshooting techniques and methods.

 

Basics of Hydraulics

Description: This course will provide an understanding of basic hydraulics. I will teach how hydraulics work - hydraulic training on how common hydraulic components operate and interact with each other. It  will also instruct your personnel about reading and understanding hydraulic schematics and review preventative maintenance procedures. Finally, this course will discuss troubleshooting of hydraulic systems. All participants will be provided with a course manual for future reference.
